Information Guide Ref: Energy Pro/Ref 22, Image, & Mirage M1-1 Components:

Tweeter Failure: The normal failure mode for these tweeters is due to the ferro fluid evaporating / migrating out over the years thus the coil cannot be properly cooled and fails during use. The ferro fluid also functions to dampen the tweeter softening the tone somewhat. Due to this a lot of people opt to rebuild tweeters in pairs to assure a perfectly matched set and avoid extra postage should the second one fail shortly after the first is rebuilt. A newly rebuilt tweeter will sound different from an older tweeter that is fatigued and / or lacking fluid.

Rebuilding: The rebuild process includes removing the old diaphragm, cleaning the gap of residue from the old fluid, cleaning and verifying the gap dimensions and flux density of the magnet assy, installing a new charge of ferro fluid and brand new diaphragm, and finally tuning and testing to original specifications. Each rebuild includes a new trim foam for the face of the tweeter.

Woofer Reconing: Woofers for the above models can be reconed. Failure is almost always with the voice coil assembly. Therefore, in most cases I endeavor to use the original cone and butyl surround to preserve the zig zag stitching which is not available on the replacement cones. If the original cannot be reused the replacement cone and surround assembly, although without the edge stitching, is sonically identical to the original. Contrary to what some have been led to believe the stitching was a cosmetic treatment only and has no sonic affect to the woofers.
I do not currently have stock of the foam trim rings for the woofers so please remove carefully and save yours for reuse.

Guarantee: ABI Technical Service is the only factory authorized source for rebuilding these products. Anyone else advertising their ability to rebuild them is very simply telling you a lie. Having purchased the original diaphragm press, tooling, and remaining stock of parts from API prior to their sale to the Klipsch Group, we will continue to support these legacy products well into the future. This combined with over 15 years experience with these products insures you a perfect rebuild to original factory standards and a guarantee of 6 months against defects of the replacement parts. Should you have any doubts please contact the Klipsch Group for advise - they will be pleased to inform you of their opinion on our work.

Tweeter Removal: To remove the Energy 22, Image, or Mirage M1-1 tweeter peel the black trim foam off the face of it. Don't worry about destroying the foam - I supply a new one with each rebuilt tweeter. Next, remove the three or four screws near the outside edge of the tweeter, not the inside group near the centre. The tweeter should now come out of the hole The wires have quick disconnect lugs on them and simply pull off the tweeter. These lugs are phased so they only connect one way thus insuring the tweeter will be hooked back up correctly. If the tweeter does not come out easily do not attempt to pry it! Follow the instructions below to remove the woofer and "help" the tweeter out from behind.

Woofer removal: Mounting screws are under the foam trim at the outer edge of the woofer. Peel off the trim carefully and retain it for reuse. Woofers are held in by 8 wood screws. When reinstalling woofers torque screws evenly but do not over tighten!

Packaging: Utmost care should be taken as your components are not replaceable! I strongly recommend you package items very well to insure against damage in shipping. Double wrapping each one in bubble packing is ideal. Tweeters with the black plastic faces are very susceptible to damage of the outer flange edge and or cracking of the face. Once wrapped items should be packaged in a box with adequate packing all around to avoid movement within the box during shipping. Placing them horizontally is best, stacking them if in pairs.

Pricing: Cost is per single unit. Pro/Ref 22 tweeter rebuild is $160.00CAD, M1-1 tweeter rebuild is $160.00CAD, Image tweeter rebuild is $160.00CAD, Pro/Ref 22 or M1-1 Woofer recone is $140.00CAD, extra Pro / Ref 22 or M1-1 tweeter trim foam is $6.00CAD, Mirage M1si tweeter rebuild is $110.00CAD.
